Steel Legion is a NES homebrew metroidvania 2D platformer set in a cyberpunk universe where you play as a cyborg commando. Explore an interconnected world, find secrets and abilities, meet NPCs and battle bosses in order to destroy a dangerous A.I.

In the far-future dystopia of 2004, the world has fallen under the iron grip of a malevolent A.I. bent on wiping out humanity. Androids, once humanity's creations, now serve as the enforcers of this techno-tyrant. But one cyborg commando, rebuilt with a human heart and a mission to save mankind, rises from the ashes of battle.

Armed to the teeth and fueled by vengeance, you will go through a battleground where every neon-lit street is a warzone. It's man versus machine, metal against metal, in a battle for the fate of humanity itself.

In this pulse-pounding, adrenaline-fueled thrill ride, it's a fight to the death, and only one will emerge victorious: you or the A.I. Central Unit. Get ready for some cyborg commando action in... "Steel Legion"!

 FEATURES

 NES Homebrew

Get ready to test your skills to the limit with the intricate level design and advanced gameplay that earned us the mention of “NES hard” by several fans of the game.

Steel Legion was made with love and dedication using the NESmaker tool and features:

  • Four different stages that include their own bosses, abilities, secrets, keys and quests to find, unlock and vanquish in any order you want;
  • Special weapons and abilities that allows you to break down walls, flip switches and access previously blocked areas;
  • NPCs that change location and give new lines of dialogue as you explore the world; and
  • High-quality 8-bit pixel art and a thunderous hard rock chiptune soundtrack.

 Explore an Interconnected World

The game is a well-crafted metroidvania with four different multiple stages that include their own bosses, abilities, secrets, keys and quests. Explore the dangerous mines, the wretched sewers, the vicious city-top or the mysterious AI base.

 Find Secrets and Abilities

Use special weapons to break down walls. Use hyper jump to access previously blocked areas. Use special missiles to target hard-to-find switch for blocked doors to open. All of this requiring thoughtful experimentation!

 Meet NPCs and Battle Bosses

Protect the humans, find more about the threats of the city-scape, collect keys while fighting hard bosses in order to reach your final destination.

And like a good metroidvania, there's a lot to collect!

Technically excellent, but unfortunately very difficult game with awesome graphics for this system. Our German-language review can be found in our recorded livestream starting at 01:43:24. English subtitles are also available. Subscription to our YouTube and Twitch channel is welcome. 🙂

Thanks a lot! Happy you enjoyed the game.

Not sure if the map that came with the game is a rough approximation if the game map, if I just really suck with maps, or both 😂

The map is pretty accurante, although it does work with screens which can be a bit tricky to see in the game where does the screen end and start.

As for your skill in using them, that's something else :P

(+2)

Horizontally, the map is pretty accurate. But vertically, the map has been stretched out a bit. One in game screen can count as 2 or sometime 3 squares on the map (vertically)

I hope you guys don't mind, I got you up on the IGDB (Internet Games Database) so people can officially add Steel Legion as their "Now Playing" game on Twitch

https://www.igdb.com/games/steel-legion

Here's the category on Twitch so you can see everybody who is live and has the game set: https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/steel-legion

Wow thanks a lot! I completely forgot about that. You sir deserve a very high five.

No prob - I registered an account on there just to do it.  Was a fun scavenger hunt of finding resources and info for the game, and then finding stuff about Aeon & Star Interactive so I could get your company in there too.  Feel free to add to what I have, or let me know what you want added and I can throw it in.  I think everything I have up there is copy/pasted from here and the main Aeon & Star website.

I tried to play the full version rom with Delta emulator, and it fails to load. Submitted a bug report with Delta, and someone looked at it and said the problem appears to be a bad header. Can you fix, please?

Hi, this screenshot is from the demo, not the final game. But they both were tested and confirmed to work on the latest version of Mesen emulator. They were also both tested and working on the original North American Nes ntsc and european pal nes. The game use flash save technology for saving and that is not suported by all emulator (it works on the latest version of Mesen) it is also not suported by everdrive cart. The game will play on everdrive but not save. The physical release of the game (available soon on Broke studio online store) works on original nes console and does save.

I will try the physical version tomorrow, but, does the rom will work on nestopia in future? About save in game, without using save stat.

The game was designed around the nes mapper 30 and from what I understand (I could be wrong) does not support traditionnal battery save, only self flashing save. Which means that if the emulator does not support flash save, in game saving will never work on this emulator until they release an update that support self flashing save. Sorry. We will update the itch page to make this more clear.

great! Thank you! I've passed along these details to the Delta emulator devs.

I bought this game on kickstarter. it's awesome. I try the digital version on my recallbox. I have just a little problem, the save in game doesn't work. I am force to use save stat.

I have found the plasma projectile. teleport myself on the train area to save . and when I launch again the game, I load the game but my character doesn't got the plasma projectile or the "better range shoot" anymore.

I'll check it out. Thanks for sharing and sorry for that.

Same thing happening to me. Using OpenEmu on Mac. (Was still able to beat the game using save states where I would usually save in game, it’s fantastic.)

on my side i use nestopia. But the game is fantastic, i enjoy it à lot.

Quoting François (main dev) from another comment: "The game was designed around the nes mapper 30 and from what I understand (I could be wrong) does not support traditionnal battery save, only self flashing save. Which means that if the emulator does not support flash save, in game saving will never work on this emulator until they release an update that support self flashing save. Sorry. Great game!

Where do I go after getting the two rocket launcher power-ups? I feel like I've visited every area, but can't seem to find a new area or ability to progress further.

Am I supposed to be able to defeat that boss robot at some point? I also saw a possible door that requires a higher jump, as well as small paths that I guess require you to shrink. Not sure.

Or is this as far as the demo goes? :)

Hey there! Thanks for playing and for the kind words.

If you mean the first boss to the right, then yes! You need to find the grenade launcher also to break down some walls. Have you found that?
